The last 4 years we have researched and gathered information to build our own mini pig herd, right here in Alaska. Pot Belly pigs can mature as large as 150lbs which for us was just way too large. We weren't entirely satisfied with the health problems that we found in the micro mini pig either and so settled on a size and breed that lays in the middle.
Our most popular boar is 20lbs and we have a variety of females ranging in size from 35lbs to 65lbs. Comparable to the dog size of a beagle to a border collie these pigs have made the most lovable novelty pet yet. They can be house broke, trained to do tricks and ultimatley make a great addition to any family wanting to do something just a little out of the ordinary.
We had our first litter with Josie and Jitter Bug. She had 6 beautifully marked piglets on August 2, 2010. This was our first litter. As such we have learned a lot about breeding in Alaska. We were not expecting the tremendous difference in nueter costs between the states and Alaska. Due to the high costs involved we didn't even come close to breaking even on this adventure. We are happy that all our piglets are in happy homes. We will be breeding again and are timing our next litter during the same time a vet from the states will be visiting Alaska and we will be able to coordinate the neuter with her at much more reasonable expense.
The Vet we used locally for this service was wonderful and we fully understand the costs involved in working for a vet company versus being able to work as a vet for oneself, as well as the overhead of facilities, meds, equiptment etc. Our mobile vet is able to do this service at a lower cost due to the ownership of this equiptment on her own as well as not needing to pay for facilities etc.
We are taking deposits on a spring litter at this time. Our breeding pigs come from a USDA approved breeding line. They mature between 30-60lbs when feed properly. Please read our recommendations for feed.
We have a variety of choices from blue eyes to speckled pigs. Some of our recent pigs have even been apartment size.
Due to the high cost of our first litter we had asked rates that were close to what we had bought our pigs for at $1000 each.
Now that we have other options for vetcare we have lowered that price. Currently we are asking $800 pr piglet regardless of sex, color and markings. We have seen other breeders ask higher prices for those piglets that they feel are going to be on the smaller side and for what they call fancies. We are hoping to keep it simple, with a single price for all. I hope that we can keep expenses down and keep it this way for all future litters.
